2024 Veterans Appreciation Week-Massing of the Colors

The Citrus County 2024 Veteran Appreciation Week kicked off with the Massing of the Colors combined event with the Nature Coast Community Band (NCCB) on October 27, 2024 at the Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church. Keeping with the theme of "Citrus County Remembers the Greatest Generation", WWII Navy Veteran Seaman 1st class Lewis Unterman was honored with a formal award ceremony receiving the WWII Victory Medal. Veteran Unterman, who is 99 years old, served from September 1944 to June 1946.  After initial training, he was shipped out to the USS Rocky Mount stationed in the Philippines.  The rocky Mount was to serve as a command ship to coordinate the landings of Operation Downfall- the larger than D-Day Allied plan to invade Japan in November of 1945. The Allies expected up to one million casualties and 10 million Japanese casualties.  The Rocky Mount was expected to be a prime target for Kamikaze planes. Then on August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hirshima, followed by another one on Hagasaki on August 9th.  On August 15th, Japan's emperor surrendered. Ten days later, the Rocky Mount left for Shanhai, China and after operations there, returned to San Francisco. The World War II Victory Medal has an obverse side with the female figure of "Liberation" holding a broken sword and resting her right foot on the helmet of Mars, the Roman god of war alluding to the defeat of both the enemy and war in general. The rising sun alludes to the dawn of a new day of peace and feedom.  On the reverse side, a palm branch is displayed.  Above it are the words "Freedom From Fear And Want" and below it are the words "Freedom of Speech And Religion". Millions of US service members were released over the next two years and most never went through a formal awards ceremony to recieve their final medal.  It was just shipped by mail in a plain box.

The chapter members also participated in the Veterans In the Classroom (VITC) program, the Veterans Day Parade, the 11th Veterans Day ceremony and the Skyview Veterans Day Tournament/Citrus Hills Dinner and Dance.
